As Christians, we face a daily battle against sin. Paul Washer recently shared a powerful truth on an Instagram reel: skipping time in the Bible is like missing breakfast; it leaves us spiritually weak and hungry. I noticed many believers struggle with sin because they don’t read or study their Bibles.

It’s like going into battle without the armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-18), I understand that studying Scripture can sometimes feel challenging, but God’s Word truly is our strength.

Together, let’s discover why the Bible is so essential and how we can beautifully weave it into our daily lives!

The Bible: Our Spiritual Breakfast

In Matthew 4:4 (NKJV), Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Just like breakfast fuels our bodies, God’s Word nourishes our souls. There are times when I struggle with this, waking up craving my coffee and jammy toast instead of diving into the Word and enjoying some devotional time.

When we skip it, we’re weak, making it easier to fall into temptation. Psalm 119:11 (NKJV) adds, “Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.” Hiding Scripture in our hearts helps us resist sin. Neglecting the Bible leaves us defenceless, like a soldier without a weapon.

The Armor of God: Equipped by Scripture

Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV) calls the Bible the “sword of the Spirit,” part of God’s armour to stand against the devil’s schemes. Without studying Scripture, we’re like soldiers without armor, unable to fight sin effectively.

I see many Christians struggling because they rarely open their Bibles. Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) urges us to meditate on God’s Word “day and night” to obey it and prosper spiritually.

Regular Bible study prepares us to live a righteous life. Attend your church's weekly Bible study and prayer meetings, as immersing yourself in the Word of God, along with prayer, strengthens your church, just like diesel fuels the engine room. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) says, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable… that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Why We Struggle Without the Bible

Paul Washer’s teachings resonate deeply with me. Over the past decade, his messages have underscored that neglecting Scripture weakens our faith, leaving us to struggle in our walk with the Lord.

Without God’s Word, we lack guidance (Psalm 119:105), renewal (Romans 12:2), and power to overcome sin (Hebrews 4:12). I have witnessed believers drift because they do not prioritise the Bible.

As a Born Again Christian, I believe studying God’s Word verse by verse transforms us.

For those of us facing challenges like dyslexia or dyspraxia, reading and studying can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, I’ve found some helpful tools along the way! I really enjoy using mind mapping on dotted A4 pads and Grammarly, which has truly transformed my writing for our ministry here.

The wonderful news for those who struggle is that God meets us right where we are.

Practical Ways to Feed on God’s Word

Even with challenges, we can incorporate Scripture into our daily lives. Here are tips that help me:

  • Listen to an Audio Bible: Use an NKJV audio Bible on apps like YouVersion or Blue Letter Bible. Start by spending 15 minutes daily reading, adding prayer time and devotional time with Our Daily Bread Devotions.
  • A readable Bible: Using a large-print NKJV Bible. A bookmark helps track lines.
  • Memorise with Audio: Repeat a verse aloud or to a tune to hide it in your heart.
  • Join a Group: Discuss a passage with friends from church or join us at bornagainchristians.faith for encouragement.
  • Use Sermons: Listen to Calvary Chapel expository teachings (e.g., Chuck Smith archives) or  the church we attend at Vizion Church Glasgow to understand Scripture.

A Friendly Invitation to Engage

Let’s commit to feeding our souls with God’s Word daily, like eating breakfast. It’s our sword, our armour, our strength against sin.

Start small, read or listen to one verse today. As Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) says, “The word of God is living and powerful.” Let it equip you to stand firm. Join me in making Scripture a priority, and let’s grow stronger together in Christ.
