You know, folks, as I was reading my Bible, a passage in Deuteronomy grabbed my heart. The Lord gave Israel a very down-to-earth instruction while they were traveling through the wilderness. He said, “Also you shall have a place outside the camp, where you may go out; and you shall have an implement among your equipment, and when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and turn and cover your refuse. For the Lord your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and give your enemies over to you; therefore your camp shall be holy, that He may see no unclean thing among you, and turn away from you” (Deuteronomy 23:12-14).

Isn’t that something? The people were on the move, and God Himself was walking through their camp to protect them and fight for them. Because He was right there among them, even the most ordinary, private part of daily life had to be handled with care. They weren’t to leave a mess that would dishonour the One who was walking among them. Holiness wasn’t just about the tabernacle and the sacrifices; it reached all the way out to the edges of the camp.

This isn’t the first time we see the Lord walking among His people. Way back in the beginning, He walked in the garden in the cool of the day, seeking fellowship with the man and the woman He had made. After sin entered, that walking was interrupted, yet the desire of His heart never changed. He still wanted to be with them. And in the wilderness He came again, walking through the camp of His redeemed people so that nothing unclean would turn Him away.

God has never been lonely, brother. From all eternity the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have lived in perfect and complete fellowship. He doesn’t need us to fill some empty place in His heart. When He walks among His people it’s not because He lacks something; it’s because love delights to give and to share. He made us in His image so that we might know Him and enjoy Him. The scene in the garden and the instruction in the camp both reveal the same heart: God wants to be near His own.

Now this is the bit I want you to get! Now under the New Covenant, the picture becomes even more intimate. The Spirit of Christ now dwells in every believer the moment we were born again. We are the temple. The same God who walked in the garden and walked through the wilderness camp now walks with us and in us.

Because God is present everywhere, our daily lives matter. The small habits we build, the private attitudes we hold, and the things no one else sees—>even in secret—>are today’s edges of the camp. We keep them clean not to earn His presence, but because He is already with us and we do not want anything that would dishonour Him.

The command in Deuteronomy was practical and down-to-earth. So is the call on our lives. It’s not about impressing others or keeping a list of rules. It’s about living with the quiet awareness that the Lord is here. He still loves to walk among His people. He still comes looking for fellowship. And He still delights when the place where He walks is kept clean for His sake.

May we walk with Him today, simply and carefully, knowing that the God who needs nothing still chooses to be with us. That is pure grace.
